New Points System for 2012 – PLEASE READ!...

Cliff Notes version:
- 1st place pts = # of teams in division. 2nd place = 1st minus 2. 3rd = 2nd minus 3, etc.

- More teams will get points in large divisions

- If you win a division you have to move up

- If you place and get points in a division, you have to stay in that division

Details:

UOVA has adopted a new points system for the 2012 tournaments. In previous years we have awarded a set number of points for first, second, and third. This year, points will be awarded based on the number of teams in the division. We felt it would be more fair for teams winning and placing in a big tournament to receive more points than someone winning/placing in the same division at a different tournament with just a few teams. This may also increase the number of teams that receive points and therefore affect what division more people can play in.

Points: First place will receive as many points as there are teams in the division. So if there are 8 teams, 1st will get 8 points. If there are 25 teams, 1st will get 25 points. Teams after that will be awarded the points of the place ahead of them, minus their own place: second place will get the first place points minus 2, third place will get the second place points minus 3, etc. Points will be awarded down as far as we can. Here are a couple examples:

6 teams in a division
1st Place – 6 pts
2nd Place – 4 pts (6 minus 2)
3rd Place – 1 pt (4 minus 3)

15 teams in a division
1st Place – 15 pts
2nd Place – 13 pts (15 minus 2)
3rd Place – 10 pts (13 minus 3)
4th Place – 6 pts (10 minus 4)
5th Place – 1 pt (6 minus 5)

31 teams in a division (largest division in the last 2 years)
1st Place – 31 pts
2nd Place – 29 pts (31 minus 2)
3rd Place – 26 pts (29 minus 3)
4th Place – 22 pts (26 minus 4)
5th Place – 17 pts (22 minus 5)
6th Place – 11 pts (17 minus 6)
7th Place – 4 pts (11 minus 7)

In Single Elimination brackets, we normally end up with ties for 5th, and 9th if the bracket is large enough. Double elimination has ties for 5th, 7th, 9th, etc. All teams that tie for a finish position will be awarded the same number of points. So if our 31 team example above was a single elimination bracket, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th would all be awarded 17 points (5th place).

No points are awarded for divisions with less than 6 teams.

Advancing to the next division: No change is being made to this rule. If you win a tournament with at least 6 teams in the division, you must move up to the next division. So if you win Novice, you have to play in B the rest of the season. Same for B and A.

Remaining in a division: This rule has also not changed, but it may affect more people. If you get points in a division, you cannot play in a lower division for the rest of the year. So if you advance out of pool and place 5th in our 15 team example in an A division, you will get 1 point and you will need to play in A, AA, or Open the rest of the year. If you place 3rd in a division with 6 teams, you get 1 point and you will not be able to move down to a lower division. The reasoning here is that if you are good enough to advance out of pool in a division, you are good enough to stay in that division. Placing 3rd in a 6 team division would have kept you in that division last year, so we stuck with the 1 point minimum.

Year-to-year division movement: Again, no change. If you place in the top 10 of the final rankings of a division (top 20 for Mens Open) you will need to need to stay in that division (or higher) the next year. If you are not in the top 10, but have points in a division, you can move down 1 division the next year.

UOVA 2010 Season Review – What did you think?‏...

Thank you all for another great season!

The final results (http://uova.org/blog/members/results/2010-results) and rankings (http://uova.org/blog/members/rankings/2010-rankings) are posted so feel free to check them out.

You are always welcome to let us know what you think, but as we start preparing for next year this is a great time to let us know what you thought of the 2010 season and what you would like to see in 2011. For example:

* Are there tournament formats you’d like to see more or less of? Triples? Fours? Parent/Child? Jrs? Coed?
* Are there locations you’d like to see more or less of?
* Anything on the website that bugs you or that you really like?
* What about the current rules? Would you prefer short courts for all divisions?
* One thing we focused on as a board was trying to improve start times, and encourage decent prizes. How did we do? Better? Worse?
* Did you like the UOVA bags this year? Any suggestions for next year?

Those are just some ideas – feel free to comment on any or all of those, or any other topic you’d like us to take a look at. Use the Contact Form on our website to let us know what you think: http://uova.org/blog/contact

It’s also not too soon to start thinking of T-Shirt designs for next year.

Have a great winter and see you in the spring!

Thanks-
UOVA Board
